INDIVIDUALS must take responsibility for eliminating poverty and hunger, says the Non-Government Organization Art of Living.
Coordinator Shalon Sugden said the movement had organised a stand-up pledge in the West to speed up the United Nations Millennium Development goals.
Mr Sugden said the stand-up pledge initiative started four years ago and by last year about 11,500 people in Fiji had come forward to pledge.
He said the initiative aimed to bring to the fore the importance of achieving the UN millennium development goals by 2015. "It's a matter of training our people to take responsibility," Mr Sugden said.
"We must encourage the general public.
"It's 2009 and we have not been able to complete the goals.
"For us, we're focused on three goals, which are ending extreme poverty, primary education for all and a sustainable environment.
"It's very simple gather the people of your organisation together at any time from Friday, October 16th to Sunday, October 18th and have everyone stand as one person and read the pledge," Mr Sugden said.
"Give everyone the opportunity to agree and about two minutes for those who stand up and show their support for the United Nations Millennium goals."
The goals are a global objective of the United Nations, which is based in New York.
