Your body was made from one cell. That cell knew exactly where to make the eyes, ears, where the kidney and heart should be. One cell multiplied itself and made so many organs of the human body. This unity in diversity is the same in the whole creation. The entire creation - sun, moon, stars, air, cloud, water, earth is made up of One thing. That One thing is called Shiva.

In relaxation there is God. Surrender and then relax.
Celebrating Silence blog: In relaxation there is God. Surrender and then relax.

Q: You are one but yet each one feels that you are connecting and talking to them. What Wi-Fi connection or system are you using to do this?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yes, there is only one Sun, but it enters into every window totally.
Q: What are the effects of Gambling and what does it do to the mind?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: We should learn the lesson from the Mahabharata war.
Q: Guruji, every form is Shakti and every formless is Shiva, then what is the representation of breath?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: It is both a combination of Shiva and Shakti. The breath connects them both.
Q: Guruji, I am very grateful to be with you. Please tell me how did you choose me?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Because you are worthy!
Q: Guruji, please tell us how to make the relationship between India and Pakistan stronger. As a young individual what should I do? I think the rivalry should only be limited to cricket.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: The friendship between India and Pakistan should increase. More and more people should meet each other from both the countries and tolerance should increase in both countries. Then the relationship will improve.
Q: Even after chanting the name of God, the mind is not contented and happy. What to do?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: That is why we have the Art of Living Course. When you will do Sudarshan Kriya then in the very first sitting itself you will experience so much of contentment and the mind becomes so peaceful. Just experience it.
That is why so many thousands of Muslim people have done the course in Pakistan, and then called me there. Why? Because they did Sudarshan Kriya and they felt connected. They started feeling good, they experienced completeness and a change happened in life. So you also do the Kriya.
Q: Guruji, what is the significance of Japa Mala?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You know when someone is in love with somebody; they go on taking their name so many times. They write their name everywhere, on the stones, on the walls; have you noticed this? I know this boy who fell in love with this girl and he wrote the name of his girlfriend all around the room. All the four walls were filled with that. Why? That is Japa.
You know when someone writes a letter they write, ‘I love you, I love you, I love you, I love you’, so many times. Why? They should have written only once, that is enough. But no, the mind wants to repeat it. In the same way, if you are in love with the Divine and you say, ‘Om Namah Shivaya, Om Namah Shivaya, Om Namah Shivaya’, and go on repeating that.
Q: Dear Guruji, can you speak on the seven chakras and the effect of the panchamahabhuta on each one of them.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: The panchamahabhuta has effect on all the chakras. Stomach is connected with fire element; the swadhisthana chakra is connected with water element. The heart is connected with the air element, the throat with the ether element and the mooladhara chakra is connected with earth element.
Q: Dear Guruji, I have heard you saying that we should bring out our originality. I made a list of activities and I found that most of them are copied. How to make my activities absolutely original, like you.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Just relax and be yourself. Go deep in meditation. Meditation is the source of creativity.
Q: People who are religious and who follow their dharma, why do bad thing happen to them?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: It happens, sometimes, but be patient for some time. It will be okay and you will move ahead in life.
Q: Guruji, there are many instances when the evil goes unpunished and the good goes unrewarded. Why?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: It appears that evil goes unpunished and the good goes without reward. It just appears but not really. In the long run the good will always be rewarded and the evil will always be punished.
Q: Somebody in my family is about to die. What can they do at this point of time?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You chant for them and bless them.
Q: Guruji, I feel that I crave recognition constantly, how to drop this?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: First step is that you have already noticed that you are craving for recognition, and the second step is it will itself get dropped. It will happen.
Q: Even in your presence why is black magic still prevailing? Please get rid of this.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: All of you chant Om Namah Shivaya, and then no black magic will have any effect on you. Don't worry; everything will be all right.
Q: Guruji, when Mahmud of Ghazni attacked the Somnath temple in Gujarat, then the Pundit of the temple told everyone that Lord Shiva will help us and there is no need to fight. All the soldiers surrendered their weapons but even then they were defeated. So who is the ultimate God?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, that was a wrong thing they did. Shiva is there but he tells everyone to do their dharma, to fight against injustice. Otherwise why should Shiva have a trishul in his own hand? You have seen, all the Gods and Goddesses have shastras (weapons) in their hands. Why should they have weapons? Because intention as well as action, both should go hand in hand.
So Lord Krishna was giving knowledge and yet he was having his Sudarshan Chakra also.
So God is only ultimate, because there is only one God.
This is what they asked me in Pakistan. They said, ‘Why are there so many idol worships?’
I said, ‘In India also we believe in only one God, but that one God is worshiped in so many forms and so many ways.’
So it is one God who comes in many uniforms. God is not in the military; in the military they always wear the same type of dress. Our God comes in all the names and all the forms, but it is only one Divinity.
So just one idol, one Shiva Linga, or one Shaligram is good enough. In your temples you don’t keep so many idols, they all are just symbols of the one Divine.
Originally in the Hindu tradition the Pooja was done only for the fire and the Kalash, this is how it started. But when the Jain religion came and when they put idols and did such wonderful worship to the idols, the Hindus also felt that we should also do something. Then the Hindus started making different idols. Before there was only one Shiva Linga, that’s all!
Q: I am stuck between God and the world. How to step away from the world and attain God?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: God is not far from you. You just need to relax. In relaxation there is God. Surrender and then relax. When we know how to relax, before and after working, then one goes into deep meditation and the connection with the Divine is established.

Q: You are one but yet each one feels that you are connecting and talking to them. What Wi-Fi connection or system are you using to do this?

What Sri Sri Said Today: Mahasatsang in Gujarat
Mahasatsang at Valsad, Gujarat
October 25, 2011
Now, we are going to do the Rudrabhishek using Vedic mantras. You know when we chant the Vedic mantras .these mantras bring a change in the environment, brings purity in the environment. Sattva increases, bad karmas are destroyed and nature celebrates. That is why this Rudrabhishek has been performed for many thousands of years for the well-being of all. Let there be timely rain, let there be a good harvest, and with these prayers it is performed. Then for health, wealth, wisdom and then for liberation; and to strengthen one’s connection to the Divine Rudrabhishek is performed.
Some great pundits have come from Bangalore, and other places. So when they read the Rudrabhishek mantras, we will all close our eyes and meditate like we are doing a ‘mantra-snan’ (bathe in the sound of the mantras), with the faith that whatever we need in life will be given to us. There is someone to fulfil our needs. This much faith and confidence should be there in the mind. The Rudrabhishek will take about forty five minutes. Afterwards we will talk again.
More than talking, the presence is extremely important and significant. For the next few minutes we will sit in the presence.
Where is Shiva? Everywhere; what is he like? He is like the sky. He is non-dual, present in all five elements, in earth, in air, in water, in fire and in ether. That Shiva element is ever present within our self (atma tattva). Our soul is not separate from Shiva, there is no distinction. So let us perform the Pooja and sit in meditation and listen to the chants.
Diwali is coming up. Tomorrow is Chaudas ; Gauraang is invoked on Chaudas. Shiva is also known as Gauraang. May Shiva manifest and may shiva tattva be awakened within us, in the environment, and everywhere for the benefit and well-being of all.
Gujarat celebrates its new year day after tomorrow. So think about all you desire to manifest in the New Year, but first let us surrender our body, mind, possessions, intellect, ego, knowledge, devotion, and everything; that is Pooja.

Just as when a cracker bursts, sparks fly and sparklers emerge, may our minds also explode giving rise to bliss.
The festival of Diwali is unique in the world, do you know why? There is a psychological secret hidden in it. All year long we interact with people, socialize with them, and some anger, some frustration builds up and some attachment and aversion accumulates. And we continue to live with these emotions. Sometimes people say, ‘Oh my head almost exploded! There is so much anger and frustration inside that I was ready to explode.’ How to eliminate this hidden attachment and aversion?
When we observe firecrackers exploding in front of our eyes, we become empty within. This is the underlying psychology. Then we distribute sweets and begin the New Year by lighting lamps to awaken the light of knowledge, so this is important.

Okay, I would advise you not to light too many firecrackers. Burn as few as is possible. So many birds and animals and even children get scared, and we should not bring fear in any living being. Burn more sparklers and the firecrackers that do not make noise, and very few of the noisy ones. I won’t say not to light on Diwali, but light a few, okay!
The damaru (dumb-bell shaped drum played by Shiva) has been reverberating in all the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and ether). In the coming year, something or the other is bound to happen in society, in nature. The earth will tremble, the rains will be excessive; but in all these situations, you will become stronger. No matter what the situation, we need to strengthen our confidence that God is our very own, and all our work will get done. If this faith is established, just watch the miracles that will happen in your life. How many people are witnessing miracles in their lives? (Many in the audience raise their hands.)
The secret to this is to maintain strong faith.
The secret to this is to maintain strong faith.
A big revolution is needed in the country. A peaceful revolution will happen and everyone will have to participate in it. By the way, in the country, Gujarat is farthest ahead. I am very happy that Gujarat has gone much ahead of all states. Gujarat’s prosperity and organization are commendable. I am very pleased with all the development that has taken place here in the last 8 to 10 years. There is electricity and water in the villages; prosperity, good-will and peace among people. This is a matter of great joy and serves as an ideal for other states where people should join together to strengthen the social, financial and spiritual organization. This will be my appeal, my blessing in this new era that Gujarat in its progress pulls forward other states also. In the land of Gujarat, bhakti has aged or matured. In the Bhagavad, it is written that bhakti was born in Tamilnadu, grew up in Karnataka and aged in Gujarat, so Gujarat is the land of bhakti.
My coming here has only one purpose that you do not have any fear. Whatever you desire you will continue to get from time to time, you just keep at it. Keeping the heart clean is extremely important, this is the only thing we need to do. What? Keeping the heart clean!
Okay, now after that, keeping your home clean and then, keeping the society clean. We need to clean up. We also need to look at cleaning the cities, our outer environment.
So cleaning of the internal environment and external environment, both are required.
So first I will stress on keeping our internal environment clean, our heart clean, but we should not stop at that. We have to keep the entire city clean, yes! This is important, okay!
I will give some work to everyone.

Okay if you ask how our inside has to be kept clean? Sometimes anger arises, temptation comes up. You see the neighbours have a nice car, and the desire to possess one comes up. You are aware that your salary will not be enough but if you took bribe from someone, or snatched someone else’s belongings, you probably could afford it. What should you do then? Read the newspaper! See how others fell into such temptation and became kings and now are lying in prison. This is what we read in the newspapers.
Just yesterday while returning from Germany, an IAS gentleman came up to me and said, ‘Guruji, I am really scared. What if 3 years from now we have to go to jail? What do we do, how do we work?’ I said, ‘Don’t do anything that would result in your being jailed.’ If someone is pressurizing you then you tell them, ‘today you are pressurizing me and tomorrow I will have to go to jail. That is why I will not do’, and you move away.
There is only that one Divine who is watching over you, who will protect you. The rest are only puppets, nothing. That is why we must have no fear, okay!
There is only that one Divine who is watching over you, who will protect you. The rest are only puppets, nothing. That is why we must have no fear, okay!
Okay now sometimes anger comes or some negative feeling comes, how do we get rid of them? By doing Sudarshan Kriya, pranayama and some meditation for a little time and you will see how the mind becomes so clean. As the mind is cleaned the behaviour of a person is also improved. And when our behaviour is good then we make many friends. Wherever you go, whoever you meet will feel like your own. And when everyone becomes friends, then what more, nothing will be lacking.
That is Vishwatma. That is what? Recognizing the one consciousness which is in everything and which is in me as well and serving this one consciousness is Pooja.
That is Vishwatma. That is what? Recognizing the one consciousness which is in everything and which is in me as well and serving this one consciousness is Pooja.
So keep your mind clean with sadhana, seva and satsang!
Tomorrow is Diwali, so for this New Year we all will take a new resolution. In the coming New Year what you will do and what you will not do. Whatever you did last year which you should not have done, take a resolution to not do that. And whatever you wanted to do but did not happen last year, pray for that to happen, yes!
Last year I did this work which I should not have done, for that also pray. So tomorrow, this Diwali we will take a resolution and pray, both together.
Last year I did this work which I should not have done, for that also pray. So tomorrow, this Diwali we will take a resolution and pray, both together.

Attaining those higher states of consciousness
DNA, 16th May, 2010
H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
The higher state of consciousness is somewhere in between the waking, sleeping and dreaming states
We lead life through three states of consciousness - waking, dreaming and sleeping.
In the waking state of consciousness, we experience the world through the five senses. We seek elevation and joy from these senses. If any one of the senses is missing, the entire dimension of that sense is lost. One who can't hear is bereft of the whole arena of sound. Similarly, he who can't see is deprived of all the beautiful sights and colours. So the sense is more important and much bigger than the object of the sense.
Rated higher than the senses is the 'mind'. The mind is infinite, its desires are many - but the capacity of the senses to enjoy is small. Greed is to want more of sensory objects - even though the amount (of money) that can be spent by an individual during a lifetime is limited, he wants all the wealth in the world. Giving too much importance to sensory objects leads to greed; giving too much importance to the senses leads to lust; and giving too much importance to the mind and its desires, leads to delusion. We hold on to the concepts of the mind and want things to happen in a certain way. Thus, the concepts in our mind impede us from perceiving the infinite consciousness that is a part of us.
I'm not saying that the senses or the mind are bad. But we must learn to discriminate between things and be aware of what is happening at all times; that is when clarity dawns on us. This is the first step towards the higher state of consciousness.
In the waking state, one is constantly engaged in looking, eating, etc. The other extreme is the sleeping state where one is completely cut off and dull. The dullness and heaviness linger even after waking. The more one sleeps, the duller one feels since a lot of energy is expended in sleep. Then there is dreaming state where one is neither asleep nor awake. Here you neither feel at rest nor are aware of your surroundings.
The higher state of consciousness is somewhere in between the waking, sleeping and dreaming states. Here, we know we 'are' but we don't know 'where' we are. This knowledge that I 'am', but I don't know 'where' I am or 'what' I am, is called 'Shiva'. This state gives the deepest possible rest that one can experience. And one can achieve this through meditation.
Meditation helps in two ways - it prevents stress from entering the system and simultaneously releases already accumulated stress. With the assimilation of meditation into daily life, a fifth state of consciousness called cosmic consciousness, dawns. Cosmic consciousness perceives the whole cosmos as part of oneself. When we perceive the world as a part of us, love flows strongly between the world and us. This love empowers us to bear with the opposing forces and the disturbances in life. Anger and disappointments become fleeting emotions that occur momentarily and then vanish.
A higher state of consciousness will not drop on your head from heaven one fine morning. The sapling of consciousness is within you - it needs to be nurtured with simple techniques of meditation. Some palm trees yield in three years, some in ten years. And those that are not nurtured never yield, they simply exist...
Attaining higher states of consciousness does not require any complicated strategy; one just needs to learn the art of letting go. This confluence of knowledge, understanding and practice makes life complete. When you grow into higher states of consciousness, you find that you are no longer thrown off balance by different situations and disturbances. You become strong yet soft - a delicate and beautiful blossom capable of accommodating different values in life without any conditions. As your consciousness opens and the whole system gets physically, mentally and spiritually elevated, your life becomes worth living.

Be patient in mind but act dynamic
DNA, 11th April, 2010
H.H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
When there is peace in the mind, you will not sense the passage of time. When there is no peace in the mind, even two minutes seem long
Time is one of the 24 principles that govern this creation. Time is not elsewhere; it is here, right now in this very moment! Every moment, every single moment is important. Live every moment of life and make life a celebration.
The silent part of the Divine is known as maha kaala. Shiva is known as Mahakaal. Mahakaal means great time. We often say, “I had a great time”. But, what does it mean? Great time means the moments present in the timeless moments. Lord Shiva is also known as Kaala Samhaara Murti. (It means the lord who slays time). How is it possible to slay time? It is possible by extreme bliss. When you are blissful you will not feel the passage of time. When you are not aware of the passage of time, then it is said that time has been slayed.
There is a close relation between time and sadness. When we are very sad, we perceive time to be too long. When you are happy, you do not feel time pass. When there is peace in the mind, you will not sense the passage of time. When there is no peace in the mind, even the two minutes that have passed by give you the feeling as though two hours were spent. So what is happiness or bliss? It is our very self. That self is the Shiva tattva or the principle of Shiva.
Usually when the word God is mentioned everybody looks up immediately. What is there up above? It only rains from above! There is nothing above. Everything is inside, neither above nor below. Looking inside or being inside is meditation and this brings real joy, real happiness.
When you look at someone close to you, your friend or somebody you love, what happens to you? Something happens inside you. You feel as though some new energy is passing through you. Capture that great moment. It is those great moments, which are timeless moments. You might have experienced those timeless moments by the presence of that person, that person might have brought forth those emotions in you. So what? Instead of getting immersed in that person or in the situation, just be with the spring of bliss rising up in you.
The Divine has given you all the small pleasures in the world, but has kept the bliss to Him. To get the highest bliss, you have to go to Him and Him alone. Be sincere in your attempts. Do not try to outsmart the divine. Once you get the bliss, then everything else is joyful. Without bliss, joy in anything in the world will not stay.
Give satsang and meditation your highest priority. Give prime time to the divine and know that God belongs to you. Either through awareness or through practice, you can reach the same spot. Divinity belongs to you. When you know you are part of the divine plan, you stop demanding. Then you know everything is being done for you. You are taken care of. Usually we do it the other way: we hurry the mind and are slow in our action. Impatience means hurrying the mind; lethargy means slowness in action. Patience in the mind and dynamism in action is the right formula.
Make your body Gods abode and there will be peace and bliss. God is not an object of senses but the feeling of feelings, the presence of presence, the sound of silence, the essence of the world and… a taste of bliss!
